Money or Brains

There has been this article doing rounds in rediff about an interview by a very famous IITian. He says there is an Pan-IIT conference going to be held in Dec. He goes on to reel about how the IITians are the best in all the places. There are so many of them in almost top posts of US, many (fewer in number, for sure) in India too. He keeps praising IIT`s for their brains and all the other stuff. He also goes on to mention that the US based IITians keep sending money back to home, to improve the conditions and all that stuff.

I would like to ask some questions.

1. Is IIT serving India or US?
There are more IITians abroad in US than in India. These IITians pride in saying many of them are there in US. They save a lot and send money back to India, thereby helping our country. But is India really in need of money or brains more. These people tend to tell that there is no freedom fow starting a company. They tell about the babugiri culture here, which is a major hurdle for them.

2. Are the bright and brainy in IIT?
There so many coaching centres all over India, which help the students to clear IIT-JEE. Many deserving candidates from the lower rung cities do not get admission into IIT because, they dont have the facilities (monetary, for coaching facilities and good coaching centres). So, this does put a question mark over the system. Are the meritorius really the top and the brightest in country.

I am not a critic of the IIT`s, but those boasting that they are from IIT have to think a second, as to whether money or brains is more important. With the government spending so much amount on their education and for the facilities, to have a world class graduation degree. Dont they have to repay back the country more than just sending back money.

Finally, I hope IIT`s serve India in a better way.
